Fourty-four Sudanese killed, 22 hurt in tribal clashes in Darfur

KHARTOUM, April 24 (AFP) -- Forty-four men have been killed and 22 others wounded in a tribal clash in West Darfur State, western Sudan, a police official said Thursday.

The official told AFP the clash between Arab and Massaleit tribes erupted Wednesday mornig at Mulle village market-place about 35 km northeast of Ginaina, capital of West Darfur State.

The injured were rushed to hospital, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, adding that a police force "immediately rushed to the scene and contained the situation."

The state's security committee immediately began an investigation into the incident, he said, delining to say which tribe started the attack nor how many of each tribe were killed and wounded.
